The MERCER NEWARK
Mercer is a residential building in Downtown Newark with ground-floor commercial space along Commerce Street.
The House Blend operated from Space 1, a street-facing corner unit with direct access from both the residential building and the surrounding downtown district.

THE SPACE
ONE ROOM. MULTIPLE USES.
The storefront was compact, open and flexible, with exposed concrete, high ceilings, large street-facing windows and a direct relationship to the building lobby.
Rather than constructing permanent rooms or fixed programming zones, The House Blend used furniture, lighting, sound, projection and programming to change how the same footprint functioned from event to event.

THE INTERVENTION
FROM STOREFRONT TO CULTURAL CONTAINER
The House Blend treated the space less like a finished venue and more like a flexible cultural room.
Soft seating, plants, curtains, lighting, sound equipment and temporary furnishings gave the storefront a domestic quality while preserving its openness.
